THE DEMANDS OF CHRISTIANITY: FORSAKE & RENOUNCE

March 15, 2018

Salvation is a free offer to everyone. No one has been exempted from the offer of salvation. It is the Father's will that all men be saved. However, though salvation is open to all, there are 'prerequisites' to being a disciple of Jesus. There are certain decisions that must be made before coming to Christ if we intend to experience the best salvation offers.

What are these demands?

1. Forsake & Renounce Everything

The first demand of following Christ is the readiness/decision to forsake all things. We must be ready to put God first. He must come before our personal plans, our family and their desires, etc.

Oftentimes, there are things He (God) would ask us to do (or instructions that He would give to us) that our families wouldn't be able to comprehend. Our family, though they mean well, can stand between us and the Father's perfect will for us if we do not have a relative disregard for them in comparison with our attitude toward God (as instructed by scriptures). Without meaning to, family has held back many from living as the Father desires.

Luke 14: 26 AMP

If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life [in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God]—he cannot be My disciple

In addition to our relative disregard for our family and ourselves, Jesus demands that we also forsake all things. If our possessions, status and other earthly achievements mean so much to us; if these things can compete with the Father's directives, then we are not well poised to experience the best of what Christ offers neither are we ready to be disciples of Christ.

Luke 14: 33 AMPC

So then, any of you who does not forsake (renounce, surrender claim to, give up, say good-bye to) all that he has cannot be My disciple.

Remember the story of the rich young ruler who could not become a disciple of Christ because of his attachment to his earthly possessions? (see Matthew 19: 16 - 22)

His unwillingness to put God first was a barrier to him following Christ and it also can be a barrier to us.

The first demand of following Christ is putting the Father first above all things.

Are you already doing that?
