Luke 13: 7 (AMPC)
So he said to the vinedresser, See here! For these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and I find none. Cut it down! Why should it continue also to use up the ground [to deplete the soil, intercept the sun, and take up room]?
Everything on earth exists for a purpose. Everything on earth, no matter how insignificant they may seem, have a unique role to play. The relevance and value of anything is tied to its ability to perform as intended and this also applies to us in our assignments or place of work. Jesus had said earlier that “you are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its taste (purpose, its strength, its quality), how can it be made salty? It is no longer good for anything, but to be thrown out and walked on by people” (Matthew 5: 13 AMP) and today, in our passage of focus, He is saying the same thing; ‘longevity is a function of relevance and relevance is a product of productivity or fruitfulness’.
Recall the example of Daniel who outlived governments. Even when there was a coup in Babylon, Daniel remained a crucial part of the (new) government. Daniel was a man who revered and honoured the Father, but the scriptures made it clear that it wasn’t just his love for the Father that made him stand out. He was also so productive that he was indispensable to every government in his day. When people are afraid of retrenchment in their place of work or losing their jobs, it is a simple indication that they know they are not productive (and as such are dispensable). Joseph was a slave in Egypt, a Jew (thus was abhorred by the Egyptians - see Genesis 43: 32), an attempted rapist, a prisoner, and an ex-convict, yet it didn’t stop him from being the Second-in-command in Egypt. He offered something no one else could offer and his relevance kept him in power till the point of his death, insomuch that he was remembered and celebrated in Egypt many years after his death.
Productivity is not so much about quantity but quality. It is about offering what no one else offers or producing results that no one else can replicate. It is about knowing our role and playing it so excellently well that our employers cannot imagine a life without us. It is about adding value.
Are you adding value at your place of work? What great idea or result can be attributed to you at work? Are you one of the many employees or a unique, distinguishable, and recognisable face? If your company or work place were to get new owners would you still be needed? Are you productive in your assignment on earth?
The good news is that as new creatures we have the wisdom of the Father at work in us. We are connected to and are partakers of the Only Wise God. So, get to work and be productive!!
I am a new creature in Christ Jesus; created in the very image of the Father. The wisdom of the Father is at work in me. I am productive. I produce excellent results. I am on earth for a divine purpose and I perform as intended by the Father. I am ever relevant. Hallelujah!!
Daniel 1: 20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm. Daniel 6:3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
