At what point did you start existing?
When you were born or at the point of conception?
Would you pin your point of existence at nine months before you were born or at appoint after that?
At what point would you ascribe life to an unborn child?
My guess is, whatever your answer is you are wrong; but then I may be wrong! Let’s find out, shall we?
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Genesis 1: 26 KJV
When God decided to create man in His image, He was declaring His intent to create an eternal being just as Himself.
In other words, every man (including you) existed even before coming to earth and would continue to exist after the sojourn on earth
Let me make this truth clearer by taking us to the account of creation.
In Genesis 1: 26 – 27, we see God created man (i.e. the spirit) and then Genesis 2:7 describes God building (making) a body before releasing the spirit (i.e. man) whom He had created into the body.
So we see man at a point in eternity existing ever before he was given a body to enable him exist on earth. And we also know that man still exists after his existence on earth; for when the dust return to the earth as it was, then the spirit shall return unto God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7)
The word ‘create’ is only used to refer to producing things without any raw materials (such as the origin of life, the origin of matter and the origin of the spirit of man) whereas ‘making’ deals with producing things out of the existent.
Thus we see Genesis 1: 20 & 21 speaking of God creating (giving life to) what the ‘waters’ brought forth (made or gave bodily form)
Thus we see that man does not step into eternity (ceaseless/ endless existence) after his existence on earth but rather his existence on earth is only a minute part of his eternal (endless) existence.
What practical difference does this change in view make?
First, it implies that man’s attention must not be just on his existence on earth but also his existence before coming to earth and his existence after existing on earth.
Secondly since a thousand years would always be numerically negligible when compared to the length of eternity, every man should be more concerned with ensuring his ‘security’ after his existence on earth than any one thing (and I am not talking about making heaven and avoiding hell).
