Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.
Few years after the children of Israel settled in their Promise Land, they departed from following the ordinances and commands of the Lord as contained in the laws of Moses. Their rebellion made them susceptible to being conquered. On one occasion, the Midianites were their oppressors. The Midianites were out to impoverish the Israelites and always showed up during the harvest seasons to destroy the increase of the land. It was from this dire condition or state that Gideon delivered Israel. He fought off the Midianites and gained back freedom for Israel. Without Gideon even making a request/ demand, the people unanimously pleaded with Gideon to rule over them. The people were more than willing to give him the highest honour because he had solved their problems.
We are on this earth for one reason. Despite the multiplicity of assignments, tasks, and jobs, the one aim of every new creature is to solve the problems on the earth. The scriptures state we are the light in a dark world and the salt of the earth, and that is our drive for working. Work is all about solving a problem or meeting a need and has never been about personal enrichment or gain.
For example, the whole (work-related) life story of Joseph was about preserving a generation during a great famine. In his own words, “As for you, you thought evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring about that many people should be kept alive, as they are this day.” (Genesis 50: 20 AMPC). His training in Potiphar's house and prison, and his gifts were all geared towards him overseeing the preservation of lives. Famine was the problem and in Joseph was the solution. Also, note that Joseph did not become the second-in-command just because he could interpret Pharaoh's dream (people with such abilities were appointed magicians or seers). He became second-in-command because he knew how to ensure the effects of the famine were minimal.
You are on earth to solve problems. Find out what that problem is and solve it!
Genesis 41: 39 & 40 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art: Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou
Matthew 5: 13 & 14 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
