Our society today is built on the principle of action and consequences. Good behaviour is rewarded and bad behaviour punished.
Understanding that nothing comes from nothing and that we have to put in some effort to get what we want, is very important in the quest for excellence and success. However, this view of life often leads to the erroneous concept that love is to be earned.
People may expect you to earn their love. Your actions may affect how much they love you (or how much love they show to you). But God loves you unconditionally.
God does not expect you to earn His love. His love for you is unconditional. He would not love you any more tomorrow than He does today. Neither did He love you more yesterday than He does today.
Do you feel unworthy of God's love? Do the perverse things you might have done make you wonder if a pure God would love you? God loves the worst of sinners on earth*, so why not you? He has an undying love for the most wicked person on earth*, surely you are covered.
Moreover, when God looks at you, He does not see your flaws and wrongs. All He sees is you - His special creation. All He sees is someone worthy of His unmeasurable and unconditional love.
* 1 Timothy 1: 15 & 16 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life. [NLT] Romans 5: 10 ...when we were at our worst, we were put on friendly terms with God by the sacrificial death of his Son... [MSG]
