Every country has its laws and judicial system that govern the operations of its citizens. Everyone may not agree with these laws but they are binding on every resident of that nation. The same is true concerning God and His judicial system. As the creator of all that exists, His judicial system is binding on everyone on earth whether they agree with it or not.
A law-abiding citizen is one who is totally perfect - just as God is. Anything short of this perfection is unacceptable. There are no middle grounds or a scale of one to ten in goodness. It's either a zero or a ten.
The punishment for living short of God's standard (sin) is death or eternal condemnation. None can escape the punishment for their sins.
The offspring inherits the nature and spiritual characteristics of its progenitor.
Though none can escape the punishment for their sins, someone else (called a substitute) may offer to bear the punishment for the erring.
The substitute must not have any sins of his own and must also be capable of serving the punishment (that is, dying).
The offer of a substitute is accepted only if two conditions are met.
The substitute voluntarily offers to bear the punishment.
The sinner willingly accepts the offer of the substitute.
